The
Boomerang is Born
By the early 1960’s, Aspen evolved from a nearly
abandoned miningtown to an international cultural and
sports destination. In the fifties the cultural elite
came from afar to the Aspen Institute to celebrate Goethe’s
200th Birthday. Aspen had arrived, and it continues
to set the standard for what other resorts aspire to.
Charlie Paterson heard about the ideal climate and
the great skiing. Among Aspen’s ski pioneers,
he arrived in 1949 at the age of nineteen and soon became
part of the prescient few who saw the international
resort Aspen would become: a place where culture and
commerce would meet on equal footing.
Charlie chose an ideal parcel of land close to downtown
and built a 128 square foot cabin on it, eventually
renovating and enhancing it over time into a first-class
lodge. The Boomerang was born, becoming one of the earliest
accommodations in Aspen. While a student at Frank Lloyd
Wright’s Taliesin West in Wisconsin, Charlie designed
the lobby and lounge of The Boomerang, keeping these
words of his mentor in mind, “In the very science
and poetry of structure there should lie the love of
nature.
The Boomerang Renaissance
This inspiration remains the credo of the new Boomerang’s
redevelopment.
The new owners of The Boomerang pay homage to those
humble beginnings that spawned generations of loyal
visitors. With its informal hospitality, thoughtful
amenities, and proximity to downtown, The Boomerang’s
renaissance combines the legacy of Aspen’s past,
with a stunning interpretation for its future by local
architects Reno Smith.
